about hammocks..................

Hammocks are used extensively in Central America and are a classic example of a timeless style conveying natural strength, harmony and tranquility - major factors influencing modern Mexican interior design.

Our hammocks are handwoven in Mexico from soft, strong cotton yarn which moulds itself to the shape of your body. The end strings of our hammocks are made from tough nylon thread for extra strength - our Large hammocks will support five average adults.

Mexican hammocks are the most versatile pieces of furniture you can own. They are simple to hang inside the home using our fixing packs - any room larger than 2.5m x 2.5m is fine. When not in use, hammocks simply hang against a wall occupying no space at all. They're a great way to unwind at the end of a stressful day, can take the place of a normal bed and make an ideal spare bed for overnight guests. With extra fixings they can be transferred between the bedroom, lounge, balcony, conservatory and garden - hammocks are the ultimate in convenience and portability.

Outside the home hammocks do not require two ideally spaced trees. A post, exterior wall or tree can be used as a permanent fixing point and it's a simple affair to rig up additional temporary supports. Our Mexican hammocks easily fit into a shoebox and can be taken to the park, forest, campsite, etc. For travellers abroad our hammocks have become the essential item for relaxing on warm, sunny days in almost any situation.

The secret to the comfort of Mexican hammocks is in the width of the net. Hammocks were originally designed to be used crosswise or diagonally. This is not possible with conventional European hammocks which are generally very narrow and constrictive. When lying across a real hammock your body weight is distributed over the weave providing good back support, a flatter lying position and greater comfort.

hammocks in the garden..............

A Mexican hammock is the perfect addition to any garden. They’re stylish, contemporary, unusual and very beautiful. They are designed for blissful comfort and relaxation.

Deceptively simple, the elegant curve and strong colours of these hammocks form a natural focus in photographs. Each one is unique and is handmade using a complex weaving technique as old as the Mayan civilisation who developed it.

In the summer our hammocks look just as good hanging on frames against backgrounds of decking and terracotta as slung from trees in traditional cottage gardens. Inside the house hammocks bring beauty and versatility to any room.

There are so many ways to hang a Mexican hammock. If you’re lucky enough to have two trees the right distance apart then a couple of lengths of rope is all you need to enjoy that lazy day feeling. A small city garden can also be the perfect place to hang out. Masonry bolts are easy to fix into a wall and strong enough to hold Goliath. A screw eye can be used in a normal fence post for the other end which can easily double as a feature for climbing plants such as clematis, honeysuckle and jasmine.

Dappled light filtering through overhanging leaves makes a blissful haven in which to doze, read or meditate peacefully.

The ‘Instant Garden’ look featuring decking and terracing is perfectly complimented by the fluid shape and vibrant colours of a Mexican hammock. Specially designed frames add versatility allowing hammocks to be moved to where the party is - or over to a peaceful nook for some quiet contemplation.
In contemporary gardens where lines, shape and texture are so important, Mexican hammocks bring additional design elements which combine simple practicality with stunning aesthetics.

Mexican hammocks come in sizes and styles to suit any garden - from chair hammocks to family hammocks - perfect for a family of five. There’s no better way to get the garden party swinging or a nicer place to enjoy a glass of wine and a chat with a friend.

Our hammocks are hung everywhere - from city warehouse apartments to balconies, swimming pools and gardens. Wherever they hang the benefits are the same. Our ammocks are beautiful, comfortable and very versatile.

Order one today and realise the full potential of a real Mexican hammock.

why buy from us..............

When you buy a hammock from us you can be sure of it's size and quality. Our Standard hammock is suitable for 1-2 people and our Large hammock offer extra comfort and flexibility due to the greater number of threads - the ultimate hammock! Both sizes need the same amount of space to hang - approx. 3m. Not all hammocks from Mexico are the same. Some claiming to be 'Double' hammocks will only take one person and most 'Single' hammocks are as uncomfortable as the narrow European versions.

We supply illustrated booklets with each hammock containing detailed information on general use, care and maintenance, washing and hanging methods, and much more. about us..................

The Mexican Hammock Company was established in 1983 to provide an outlet in Europe for co-operative based producer groups in rural Mexico. The company was set up as a joint venture between ourselves in the UK and a small group of villagers in southern Mexico with the specific aim of developing reliable, alternative sources of income in areas of high unemployment and relative poverty.

We hope that you enjoy this small collection of beautiful handmade items brought direct to your home from Mexico. Each article originates from the hands of a single artisan and is unmistakably unique setting it apart from modern, mass-produced products.
